SLJ - W1/D5/A2 - Swimming to Safety

Retell the story of Ysura Mardini:

Ysura Mardini and her older sister Sarah fled their country because of the Syrian War, and set off to find somewhere safe in Europe. In the summer of 2015, they travelled to Lebanon, Turkey and then departed to Greece in an overcrowded boat.

15 minutes of being on sea, the boats engine failed. Ysura Mardini is a professional swimmer and she was determined not to let any of the people on the boat down so her sister, 2 other people and herself (Ysura Mardini) jumped off the boat and into the water. They were in the water for 3 and a ½ hours, to stop there boat from capsizing saving 20 peoples lives.

A year later she was recognized and became a member of the first ever Refugee Olympic Team and competed in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. She has met US President Barack Obama and Pope Francis. She has been given a number of awards and has been recognized for her work by Time and People magazines.

Ysura Mardini now lives in Berlin, Germany and is concentrating on her professional swimming career. Her goal is to compete in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Her message of hope, determination and courage reminds everyone that those who flee their countries are capable of achieving amazing things.

  2. Kia ora Katelynn,

Thanks for sharing your post on Yusra Mardini. It’s such an incredible story isn’t it? Hard to believe anybody could survive what she went through, let alone compete in the Olympics.

I noticed that your post is very similar to Yusra’s website. To get full points for this activity you need retell Yusra’s journey in your own words. That means more than just changing a few words. Do you think you could update your blog? I’d love to see you tell the story in your own way :)
