SLJ - W2/D2/A1 - A Long Walk to Freedom

A Long Walk to Freedom

Day 1: Today I was put into a small, damp, concrete cell with only a straw mat to sleep on. They gave me a journal to write each night. It’s going to be a very long 27 years in prison.

Week 1: It's been a week here in prison. I go to work each day and break rocks into gravel. It’s really tiring, that's why I haven’t been writing in my journal for a week.

3 Months later: It has been such a hard past 3 months. I am extremely tired, breaking rocks into gravel is like I said before extremely tiring. It is going to be such a long time here in prison. My cell is so cold and damp. My straw mat is definitely not comfortable but I’ll get used to it.

2 Months later: I have broken so many rocks into gravel, I could probably do it with my eyes closed. It makes me so tired that when I get back into my cell I completely forget to write in my journal.

1 Month Later: I was allowed my visitor today, no one came. So I got sent to work earlier than usual. When I got back into my cell, I decided to just sit and think. Strangely I wasn’t that tired but I’ll probably be extremely tired tomorrow. Once again I was breaking rocks into gravel today, it’s getting a little easier now since I have done it for so long. I finally fell asleep after a while, a long while.

6 months later: It’s finally been a year here in prison, only 26 more to go. I’m still breaking rocks into gravel, I’ve been so tired lately I have been forgetting to write in my journal.

26 Years and 6 Months Later: I have been informed today that it is my last time to be able to have a visitor here in prison, but I don’t. I only have 6 months until I am allowed out of here, then I can see who I want to see. It has been such a long time here, I can’t wait to be out. I’m still breaking rocks into gravel, I’m going to be an expert on how to break rocks into gravel when I get out of here. Anyways I’m going to go to bed now.

6 Months later: I am finally out of prison.

SLJ - W2/D1/A3 - 'Dear Jacinda'

Dear Jacinda Adern,

I am writing to you to inform you of our (New Zealand’s) native animals are under threat because of land clearing. Many birds (Fantails, Moreporks, Black Robins and many more) are losing their homes because of this. Each time they cut down a tree, they are getting rid of poor birds home and they may even have there baby bird eggs in there. How would you feel if you were one of the loggers getting rid of a poor birds home?

Did you know according to google more than 4000 native plants and animals are at risk of extinction because there habitat is being changed or destroyed, leaving them with no home. Thinking of that makes me sad, because we are so lucky here in New Zealand to have nature all around us. Why would they want to get rid of that?

Our native flightless bird, the kiwi is nearly extinct. According to google there are only 68,000 kiwi left, when there (according to google) use to be 12 million and it is steadily going down. Kiwis are New Zealand's native animal, we can’t let them get extinct or any other birds go extinct.

Yours Sincerely

Katelynn

SLJ - W1/D5/A2 - Swimming to Safety

Retell the story of Ysura Mardini:

Ysura Mardini and her older sister Sarah fled their country because of the Syrian War, and set off to find somewhere safe in Europe. In the summer of 2015, they travelled to Lebanon, Turkey and then departed to Greece in an overcrowded boat.

15 minutes of being on sea, the boats engine failed. Ysura Mardini is a professional swimmer and she was determined not to let any of the people on the boat down so her sister, 2 other people and herself (Ysura Mardini) jumped off the boat and into the water. They were in the water for 3 and a ½ hours, to stop there boat from capsizing saving 20 peoples lives.

A year later she was recognized and became a member of the first ever Refugee Olympic Team and competed in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. She has met US President Barack Obama and Pope Francis. She has been given a number of awards and has been recognized for her work by Time and People magazines.

Ysura Mardini now lives in Berlin, Germany and is concentrating on her professional swimming career. Her goal is to compete in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Her message of hope, determination and courage reminds everyone that those who flee their countries are capable of achieving amazing things.
