SLJ - W2/D1/A3 - 'Dear Jacinda'

Dear Jacinda Adern,

I am writing to you to inform you of our (New Zealand’s) native animals are under threat because of land clearing. Many birds (Fantails, Moreporks, Black Robins and many more) are losing their homes because of this. Each time they cut down a tree, they are getting rid of poor birds home and they may even have there baby bird eggs in there. How would you feel if you were one of the loggers getting rid of a poor birds home?

Did you know according to google more than 4000 native plants and animals are at risk of extinction because there habitat is being changed or destroyed, leaving them with no home. Thinking of that makes me sad, because we are so lucky here in New Zealand to have nature all around us. Why would they want to get rid of that?

Our native flightless bird, the kiwi is nearly extinct. According to google there are only 68,000 kiwi left, when there (according to google) use to be 12 million and it is steadily going down. Kiwis are New Zealand's native animal, we can’t let them get extinct or any other birds go extinct.

Yours Sincerely

Katelynn

  1. Hi Katelynn

This is a fantastic letter that you have written to Jacinda Ardern about our precious bird life in New Zealand.
You are so right with worrying about their habitat being destroyed. We pride ourselves on our green country but we are not looking after some of our most vulnerable species.
You would go well with my daughter, she is a huge bird lover. She works for DOC in Franz Josef and helps care for the injured birds that are brought into the centre by people.
Have you been to the Kiwi centre in Franz Josef? You can get a backstage pass and take a tour of the nursery where they hatch the kiwi eggs. You can see kiwis from 1 day old! It is really incredible. They raise them there and then release them into the wild.

I think that you will be a great leader in the future for helping out our native birds and animals. Good on you Katelynn. It is a very well worded letter that you have written and they would have to take notice of what you are saying.

    Well done

    Until next time

    Allie :)

  2. Kia Ora Allie,

Thank you for commenting on my blog. Seeing a 1 day old kiwi would be awesome. I'm not sure if I have been to the Kiwi centre in Franz Josef. I might have but I'm not sure.

    Katelynn
