Japan Facts

Japan Facts

Over the past few weeks we have been going to Mrs Gully's class and learning about Japan. Here are some facts I learnt.

1. Japan is very similar in size to New Zealand.

2. Japan's population is 125,000,000 and New Zealand's is 5,000,000.

3. In Japan people speak Japanese. Everyone in Japan knows a little bit of English.

Here are some words I learnt:

1. Ohayoo Gozaimasu - Good Morning
2. Konnichi Wa - Hello
3. Sayoonara - Goodbye

Athletics 2019

Athletics 2019

On Wednesday this week we had athletics, I competed in everything except High Jump which is today after lunch. Since it was so wet down at ANZAC park we did shot put and discus at school, then we went down to ANZAC park at 1pm to do the long distance, sprints and long jump. First up after the years 5,6,7's the year 8's ran 1,200 metres which is 3 laps around ANZAC park. I was in the lead the whole time for the girls by a good 6 metres but then right on the last sprint Reagan got past me and ended up beating me by around 2 seconds. I was really gutted but I tried my hardest and still got 2nd!!! I was really happy with how I went but kind of gutted I got 2nd by not much at all. Everything else I was pretty good at and enjoyed.

Should all schools have uniforms? Argument Writing

This week we have been working on a practice argument for our Easttle test. I decided my topic to argue about should be 'Should all school's have uniforms?' so I did.

Should all schools have uniforms?

I fiercely believe that schools should have a school uniform, because that way there would be no bullying, uniforms teach students to take pride in what they’re wearing and you would be focused on your learning not what you are wearing or what anyone else is wearing. How would you feel if your child spent half an hour deciding what to wear, when if you have a uniform you wouldn’t need to spend half an hour deciding?!

Firstly if everyone is wearing the same clothing there will be no competition with labels. (Nike, Adidas, Converse, Asics) Everyone will look-alike and there will be no teasing if you don’t have certain top, hoodie or pants with a label. Other students who have “better” clothing might possibly make fun of the less fortunate. How would that make you feel if your child didn’t have the “best” clothes? Google says 22% of public schools have a uniform. Waking up and getting dressed in the morning would be so much easier if you had a uniform, you wouldn’t have to spend half an hour deciding what to wear or being concerned if you wear something you might possibly get teased. Shoes are also another reason that some people get bullied for, because you might not have a certain brand of shoes or socks.

Secondly uniforms teach students to take pride in what they’re wearing. They will feel honored to represent there school at sports activities, choir trips or any other school activities. If your school didn’t have uniforms then you wouldn’t be able to tell which school you belong to and that specific school would look untidy. School uniforms are something to be proud of and this way everyone looks the exact same, you wouldn’t be worrying about what you look like or what your friend looks like. How would you feel if your child attended an untidy school, with nothing to show which school they come from? That would make me feel ashamed because if your child got into a national sports event they won’t have anything to show which school they come from.

Thirdly you would be focused on what your wearing as everyone looks the same. You wouldn’t be worried about your appearance like your shoes, outfit or hair. You can focus on your work much easier as there would be no bright colours or people making fun of you. It would be much easier to pay attention to your work and you wouldn’t be worried about what your wearing. Having no uniforms would make it so much harder to concentrate as you would constantly thinking how does my hair look? Do my friends like my shoes?

In conclusion, I fiercely believe schools should have a uniform for the reasons of bullying, children will take pride in what they wear and they will be focused on their learning not what there wearing or what there friend is wearing. So, what do you think? Should all schools have a uniform or not? I fiercely believe they should have a school uniform for the 3 main reasons I have written about.

Shake Out

Shake Out

On Thursday around 1:35 pm our school (Grey Main) and the rest of the nation had a big Shake Out, which is a practice drill if there is a earthquake then followed by a Tsunami drill.

What we did: At around 1:35 - 1:40 pm we had a message from the intercom saying there is an earthquake. We all then dropped under the nearest table covering our head with our hands. We then had another message over the intercom saying that it is safe but there is a possibility of a tsunami. When then walked out of the classroom, out the gate near the tech centre, across the road and up the drive of an ex-students drive. Mrs O and Mrs Drake then talked to us about what we would do if it was real. After that we walked back to class and talked about what we could improve on.
